When Corker was just 13 years old, he started working by collecting trash and bagging ice. As he got older, he took jobs at Western Auto and worked as a construction laborer. After finishing school, he spent four years working as a construction superintendent. During this time, he saved $8,000, which he used to start his own construction company called Bancor.

In 1990, Corker sold his company. He first tried to become a United States Senator as a Republican in 1994, but he lost to Bill Frist. Corker has also been the mayor of Chattanooga and served as the Commissioner of Finance and Administration for the State of Tennessee, working for Governor Don Sundquist from 1995 to 1996.
