Punita Devi – Spouse of Akshay Thakur Appeal to the Government

Punita Devi, the wife of Akshaya Thakur, shed tears when the plea to halt the hanging of four convicts in the Nirbhaya gang rape-murder case was dismissed by the Delhi lower court. Outside the Patiala House court, Akshay’s wife expressed her anguish, stating that she and her underage son should also face the same fate and be hanged.

Akshay’s spouse recently initiated divorce proceedings at the Bihar Family Court. He expressed his reluctance to continue living with the stigma of being the rapist’s widow. Outside the court on Thursday, he voiced his desire for justice and stated, “I also seek justice. I don’t want to live anymore. My husband is innocent. Why is society targeting us? We have been living with the hope of obtaining justice, but for the past seven years, we have been dying every day.” In a distressing act, she began hitting herself with sandals, prompting the attending lawyers to intervene and provide her with bandages.

Contrarily, Jitendra, the lawyer representing the victim, expressed a firm stance that the convict should not be shown any mercy, while acknowledging the plight of his wife and extending sympathy towards her. Jitendra emphasized that Akshay, being a member of society, cannot be deemed worthy of any leniency despite the unfortunate occurrence of unnatural deaths. He further emphasized that Akshay’s wife had no involvement in the crime, and her inevitable loss of her husband evoked his sympathies.

Akshay’s wife arrived at the courtroom accompanied by her eight-year-old child and expressed her concern to the judge, stating that she believed justice was not being served. She emotionally pleaded, “If you hang my husband, what will become of me and my son? We deserve justice too. Please consider our situation.”

In response, the judge acknowledged the presence of Nirbhaya’s mother and requested Akshay’s wife to share her perspective with her. After the judge delivered the verdict, Akshay’s wife, accompanied by four female police officers and her lawyer, left the courtroom.
