Career / Fashion and Style
As of his career, John Madden embarked on his football journey in 1954 when he joined the College of San Mateo. He continued his education at the same college in 1955, followed by a semester at Grays Harbor College in the fall of 1956. Subsequently, he enrolled at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo for the years 1957 and 1958, during which he showcased his versatility by playing on both offense and defense for the Mustangs.
Unfortunately, his professional football career was abruptly halted during his first training camp with the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles in 1958. He had been selected by the team in the 21st round as the 244th overall pick. However, an injury to his opposite knee occurred, preventing him from ever getting a chance to play at the professional level.
At the age of 32, he was appointed as the head coach of the Raiders on February 4, 1969, making him the youngest head coach in professional football at that time. Under his leadership, the Raiders made it to five AFC Championship games in seven years but unfortunately fell short, creating a perception that they, like the Dallas Cowboys, were unable to secure victory in crucial moments.
On January 9, 1977, the Raiders led by Madden emerged victorious in their first Super Bowl, securing a remarkable 32–14 win over the Minnesota Vikings. However, their journey the following year was met with disappointment as they fell short in the AFC Championship Game, losing to the Denver Broncos by a close margin of 20-17. Sadly, on January 4, 1979, due to the cumulative toll of a worsening ulcer condition and occupational burnout, John Madden made the difficult decision to resign from his position.
John became a color commentator at CBS in 1979, and two years later, in 1981, he and Pat Summerall were elevated to become the network’s premier football announcing duo. Prior to teaming up with Summerall at CBS, John collaborated with various broadcasters such as Dick Stockton, Frank Glieber, and Gary Bender.
During their last CBS telecast together, which took place on January 23, 1994, he expressed to Summerall that although CBS might not have the NFL at the moment, they could cherish the memories they had. It was a sentiment that held true, as CBS would eventually regain NFL rights in 1998, surpassing NBC’s bid for the AFC telecasts.
During the last episode of ABC’s “Monday Night Football” in 2005, he expressed a similar sentiment. Subsequently, when he became the most prominent figure in football broadcasting, Fox, ABC, and NBC extended offers that surpassed the $2 million salary cap for sportscasters.
John and Summerall decided to join Fox’s NFL coverage instead of ABC, primarily due to the significantly higher annual salary offered to them. Their contract with Fox would have made them the highest-paid NFL players, with a lucrative deal of $8 million in 2003. During February 2002, John contributed to Fox’s coverage of Super Bowl XXXVI. Additionally, in 2002, John secured a commentary role on ABC’s Monday Night Football, estimated to earn him a substantial $5 million per year.
In 2005, NBC Sports president Dick Ebersol made an announcement stating that Madden would provide color commentary for the network’s Sunday night NFL games. Madden concluded his commentary career with the Super Bowl XLIII game between the Arizona Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Steelers on February 1, 2009. Subsequently, on April 16, 2009, he formally announced his resignation from the television booth.
Collinsworth assumed the role as his replacement. Furthermore, during his tenure coaching the Raiders in the 1970s, John embarked on his broadcasting career by dialing in to the renowned San Francisco radio host “The Emperor” Gene Nelson’s program on KYA station.
