He began his career in Stampede Wrestling, where he joined forces with Ben Bassarab in 1986 and emerged victorious, securing the Stampede Wrestling International Tag Team Championship. In 1978, he received the prestigious Rookie of the Year Award from Pro Wrestling Illustrated.
In 1987, at New Japan Pro Wrestling, his high-flying fighting style proved highly effective, leading to victories over renowned opponents like Keiichi Yama and many others. Remarkably, he achieved a groundbreaking feat by capturing the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship, becoming the first wrestler of non-Japanese origin to accomplish this momentous milestone.
In 1988, he caught the eye of WWF and was brought into the wrestling ring under the persona of the Blue Blazer. At Survivor Series ’88, he marked his first appearance on pay-per-view, joining forces with The Ultimate Warrior, Jim Brunzell, Sam Houston, and Brutus Beefcake in a team battle against Outlaw Ron Bass, Bad News Brown, The Honky Tonk Man, Greg Valentine, and Dangerous Danny Davis.
On March 11, 1989, he suffered a loss against Ted DiBiase during Saturday Night’s Main Event XX. Additionally, he was defeated by Mr. Perfect at WrestleMania V. Although he initially showcased promising performances during his early appearances in WWF, his unique style eventually became a target for his opponents, resulting in a series of subsequent defeats.
In October 1991, he made a return to the WWF (World Wrestling Federation) and began splitting his time between Japan and the USA to participate in various promotions. He also made his debut on World Championship Wrestling’s TV show on March 16, 1991. Bret Hart, along with his brother Owen, formed a team to compete against Shawn Michaels and his group of “Knights” at the Survivor Series in 1993.
In their highly anticipated WrestleMania 10 encounter, he skillfully immobilized his brother, securing a resounding victory and cementing his triumph. Notably, Bret emerged victorious in the same event, clinching the prestigious WWF World Heavyweight Championship, further fueling Owen’s resentment. This ignited a series of intense clashes between the two siblings. Eventually, they found themselves locked inside a steel cage at the 1994 SummerSlam, where Bret once again emerged triumphant.
He joined forces with Yokozuna for the Tag Team Championship match at Wrestlemania 11, emerging victorious against Shawn Michaels and Diesel to claim the title. Throughout 1996, he primarily competed in tag team matches and engaged in a year-long on-and-off feud with his brother-in-law.
In early 1997, he swiftly captured the Intercontinental Championship, only to relinquish the title to Stone Cold Steve Austin by August of the same year. The following year, he formed an alliance with Jeff Jarrett, engaging in numerous tag team encounters alongside him.
During the Blue Blazer storyline on January 25th, 1999, he emerged victorious over Ken Shamrock and The Big Boss Man to capture the tag team championship. Continuing their reign, they successfully defended the titles against Test and D’Lo Brown at WrestleMania XV.
On April 5, 1999, they were defeated and lost the titles to the team of Kane and X-Pac. Both wrestlers continued their careers until tragedy struck in May during the Over the Edge pay-per-view event, when Hart sadly passed away. On December 7, 2015, WWE released the DVD and Blu-ray titled Owen: Hart of Gold.
