At the 1976 Republican National Convention, Paul Manafort made a name for himself when he was given the job of managing delegates. He helped President Gerald Ford fend off a strong challenge from California Governor Ronald Reagan.
This event marked the start of his career, which eventually became known for corruption and illegal activities. In 2018, Manafort was found guilty on eight out of eighteen charges. These included five counts of tax fraud, one count of hiding foreign bank accounts, and two counts of bank fraud.
Later, he also pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy against the United States and another count of conspiracy to obstruct justice due to his attempts to tamper with witnesses. In 2006, Manafort signed a $10 million-per-year contract with Oleg Deripaska, a Russian oligarch with close ties to Vladimir Putin.
